A Promising Farewell?
The coaches closing remarks made me take a sip of the Kool-Aid.

Blueshirt fans I would highly recommend checking out Tortorella’s break-up day remarks which you can find on a few of our links to the Pro Blogs.

I know many fans had mixed emotions about Torts; his constant line changes, the way he carried himself and the general inconsistency throughout the year. However, I think he deserves another year for two key reasons.

-         He is committed to getting younger and not afraid of pushing veterans out of the way to do so. This is a league where your “home grown” talent wins you games, just look at the NHL’s top teams such as Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Washington.

In reference to Parenteau, who Torts said was one of the top skill guys on this   team and with some hard work in a few key areas could be a huge part of next years team. I couldn’t agree more as P.A. has a nose for the net and I would love to see him get a real shot a becoming a top guy on this team. The reason I mentioned him specifically; being the skeptical Ranger fan I am, is he would have been a typical guy the Ranger organization would have tried for a few games and dumped in the first juicy deal that came along.

He also realized the importance of Anisimov and his own critical role as a coach in finding the “right” spot for the talented youngster on this team.

-     The next positive about Tortorella is his willingness to point out a clear problem with the locker room. Generally a coach should not get too involved in this aspect of the team, as it is key for the players to come together and develop their own identity; but keeping a pulse of what goes on is vital.

We knew things were not great but after some of the comments yesterday, it      seemed like this room was a disaster for most of the year. It also seems the          problems did not stem from the team leadership (The C and the A’s), but rather a       few cancerous players within.

No specific names were mentioned but I bet if Torts has his way he will find these          guys and send them packing in one way or another.

I know this is a controversial post but I truly believe he has the strength to fight the tendencies of this organization and go with a youth movement. We know the core of this team is a young hard working bunch of guys, but if he stays true to his word by cultivating the youth and seeking out the problems…I am in.

First you have to get the cancer out. We don't know who it is... Maybe Redden maybe someone else. If he commits to getting younger, and so does the GM (hopefully not sather) this team could get another top 10 pick next season and make some real noise after that.

Kwill I agree...a few more top picks with some of the young guys soon to come up the talent level could really jump up a few notches!

I did see (& read) his comments and it only validates why I have thought that he was the right man for this job. He made it fairly clear that he has no use for Redden and at the end of the day when you only have one person scoring on a consistent basis, you have to shuffle your lineup. He spoke very highly of Shelley and Prust which surprised me. Especially Shelley. Being that there seems to be no way way that the 'Sham' GM/Pres. is going anywhere, there needs to be at least one person who knows how the game is and who the personnel should be. That person is Torts and I am proud of his comments and glad I stuck by him thorugh others negativity.

can you believe it. sather got rid of betts in favor for brashear. there was major mistake number 1. it was a horrible move. a move that cost the rangers the playoffs. after watching the flyers defeat the devils, it was partly becaause of betts wonderful play.

Greg sorry I have got to disagree with you on Tortorella because he is the biggest problem they have after Sather. He said he wants to get younger but yet as soon as he called up Eriksson that was the last we saw of Gilroy.
He claims to like PAP but there was no reason for PAP to have been sent back in the first place. PAP had deserved to remain with the team but yet got demoted.
Funny how a guy who wants his team to get younger had no problem with the team signing Prospal, trading for Shelley and said the team was in the market for a veteran backup for Henrik when he has not even thought about giving either Zaba or Johnson a shot at the job.

Getting younger means opening the doors from within and so far Tortorella has done a piss poor job in that department. Del Zotto never improved defensively, Gilroy we see how he was treated, Potter who in every appearance has shown over the last 2 years that he deserves to be on the team (watch him walk as a UFA this summer).

Tortorella is a con man plain and simple, he will toss players under the bus while in the same breath claim he is not singling anyone out.

Remember the Jon Lovitz character from SNL Tommy Flanagan? You know the one who told tall tales and had the catch phrase " Yea that's the ticket" when he said the most bogus things.

That is John Tortorella only he is not funny when he does it

sather has to go, and the coach can go with him. He's an excuse machine with a fleet of buses, that stay away from bus stops. He might have to fight or stick up for his team, but he'd rather not. He's a punk and a phony with a bad attitude. Go by his actions, not his bs.

What are the prospects of seeing some of our bigger
defenders (Nigel Williams, Michael Sauer (HFD),
Pavel Valentenko (KHL), or Ryan McDonough on Bway?

Posted by: charles fishman | April 16, 2010 at 01:18 pm

Jess I completely disagree with your comments. First off you sound like management should blindly go with youth in all situations while disregarding everything else. Gilroy was a rookie who was benched at the end of the season because his play was horrible. He was an incredible liability defensively and he wasnt contributing offensively (his strong point). Torts recalled Eriksson who gave them a better chance in their playoff push. Gilroy is signed for another year and isnt going anywhere.

Did you happen to watch Johnson when he was given an opportunity this season? He was completely shelled. A backup goalie position is not one you develop around youth when you have a franchise goaltender in Henrik who isn't even 30 yet. Did they groom a rookie behind Brodeur when he was 28?

Also I think Prospal and his 1.1 million dollar cap hit might be the best bang for your buck signing in the NHL this offseason. He happened to be second on the team in scoring so how can you bash that move at all?

You can't have a team that is fully of youngsters (unless of course you have talent like the Pens - crosby, staal, malkin, fleury). You need some veterans on the team. Keep in mind the Rangers only had 7 out of 25 players on thier season ending roster who were over 30.

Kevin:

Even Pittsburgh has carried veterans like gary Roberts, Bill Guerin, Matt Cooke and others over the course of this latest success run. At teh end of the day, yuo are either going to have players who respond to the demands of an organization or you aren't. Flagship organizations liek New Jersey, Detriot and Pittsburgh are always going to be in the mix because they have found a formula that allows them to swim in any kind of waters - be it a pond or an ocean. The Rangers, sadly, are reduced to wearing life-jackets being swept along a current leading to nowhere because the ownership and upper management have not a clue as to how to run an organization. And I could care less what the 'Sham' did 30 + years ago. He is a cancer that has infected entire franchise.

Posted by: steve k | April 18, 2010 at 10:42 am

You can't just get younger for the sake of getting younger, especially if your youth are not ready to produce in the NHL and won't make you much better in the future. Del Zotto and Gilroy both would have benefited from time in Hartford and Potter, et al are not high end players. So you can't remotely compare the Rangers youth to that of Pens or Caps. There are no first line/first pairing players in the Rangers system. The Rangers will have to continue to supplement their much discussed 'core'.

Posted by: Original 6 | April 18, 2010 at 04:10 pm

del zotto did not have hartford as an option. it was either nhl or juniors

agree on the youth. not nearly as good as some make it out to be. can't comment on last 2 yrs of drafts though. way too early.

Posted by: LI Joe | April 18, 2010 at 04:18 pm

LI Joe. You can't throw Pittsburg in that conversation for having a a great system. Their winning formula was be so terrible (to the point of rumors of moving the team) that they were able to stack up draft picks. This led them to be able to get two #1 overalls (crosby and fleury) and a #2 overall pick in Malkin. All of this was within 3 years. Of course they are going to be good.

And for the record I wasnt sticking up for Sather or the Rangers approach the last couple of years. I was simply disagreeing with someones assessment that the rangers havent been going in the direction of a youth movement. Do I agree with Sather and Tortz direction? Not necessarily but I feel that Tortz, like Renney was a victim of poor personnell decisions (Sather's decisions). I feel Tortz's in your face style will always rub people the wrong way unless his team is winning. I keep asking myself could another coach have made this team a playoff team (one that wouldnt be a first round knockout) and the answer i keep coming back to is no. This is Sather's disaster not Tortz.

Posted by: Kevin | April 18, 2010 at 06:18 pm

kevin aren't you responding to the post below mine (ie steve k). i was agreeing with you.

as for sather being disaster i agree fully. well him and dolan. but the reason i agree is the abysmal record at the draft table(not counting the last 2 yrs since way too early to judge them), henrik was drafted by neil smiths people around same time sather was hired. sure there are a handful of teams with poorer records at the draft than us. just as many with far better draft records than sather has had in 10 yrs - and also had in his last few yrs at edm.

the sather error has been an absolute disaster

Re: Pittsburgh:

At the end of the day, whereas Pittsburgh ahd 2-3 losing they had a General manager who was able to provide his team with the players that they needed. whether they came from picks, FA signings or wherever. The 'Sham' has had over a friggin' decade with this fracnhise. Think about it. Over 10 years and has won an astounding 14 playoff games. Someone had mentioned letting Betts go and that is just the tipping point. How far abck would you like to reach for validation that Sather has been the issue, is the issue and will continue to be the issue. Torts is NOT the issue. How do I know ths? because, we tried the Zen approach with Tom Renney for 'x' amount of years and met some mild success. However, the rangers franchise has become such an abject failure that we have become to to fib ourselves and believe that simply being in the playoffs is an accomplishment. And with the moron running the team, maybe it is. However, I can you this. Tortorella's assessment of this club on breakup da was spot on. Everything he said was absolutely right. I could care less if his "in your face" approach to the game rubs people the wrong way. Stop being so damned sensitive. If the players can't handle it, they ought to do something else for a living. If they play to their potential night in and night out, they won't have any issues. Why did Messier flourish under Keenan so well? Because in his prime (& even after his prime) Messier left it all on the ice. There have been too many Rangers who haven't left it on the ice and that is a player problem, a coaching problem and a management problem. The owner is too fu***** stupid to even comment on. The 'Sham' has gone through 6 coaches in his tenure - including hmself. Who's he gonna fire and then hire? He's a joke. And a failure. And a loser. And yet, he's untouchable.
