Chemistry Outweighs Talent For Rangers Offense
The Blueshirts have enough talent to form an exciting offense. But whether talent equals results is an annual question for the team...

It's up to players like Frolov whether the Rangers will be able to put the puck in the net or not

It's up to players like Frolov whether the Rangers will be able to put the puck in the net or not

Anyone who knows anything about hockey knows that chemistry is just as important as individual talent.  The best players in the world often struggle to find matching combinations that bring out their best.  Jaromir Jagr, one of the league’s greatest players, had an extremely difficult time meshing with a center once Michael Nylander left the Rangers.

This year’s club boasts a bevy of players that could be 20-goal scorers and 60-point players.  Vinny Prospal, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, Todd White, Alex Frolov, and Erik Christensen all have the ability to reach those impressive totals.  The question is, will they?

The Rangers had a tough time last year creating sustained offense despite coach John Tortorella’s constant tinkering with line combinations.  Maybe he should have stuck with certain trios longer, but he clearly felt that chemistry changed week-to-week and game-to-game.

For the Rangers and any NHL team to be successful, most of their offensive players must approach their ceiling of offensive production.  If everyone underachieves, it’s basically impossible for a team to be competitive.  Some of the Rangers offensive might comes in the form of young talent, so it’s understandable that there are growing pains.  If they all come together, the Rangers will have a productive offense.  If they toil in mediocrity again, the team will continue to lack the firepower to support Henrik Lundqvist.

There’s no doubt that the Rangers have talent.  Maybe not the elite-level players that Stanley Cup contenders possess, but certainly enough to be a playoff team.  The problem is that there are a number of teams in the same boat.  The difference between who makes it and who doesn’t is in which teams get the most production from their mid-level NHL players.  We know what we’re getting from Marian Gaborik.  But it’s up to Prospal, Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, White, Frolov, and Christensen whether the Rangers sputter along offensively or have an exciting year.

What are your expectations from these players this season?

The Norwegian Hobbit, Mats Zuccarello-Aasen, could add the zip that makes these guys all compete. If he gets used to the North American rink quickly, he's an X-factor that no one seems to be looking at. A young Danny Briere?

Of the "potential" 20/60 players mentioned above here are some thoughts. In order for Brandon Dubinsky to reach those type of numbers he needs to be more consistent. The last two seasons he seems to "disappear" for lengthy stretches which raises some doubts that he can be a 60 point guy. Due to the type of game Ryan Callahan plays, a 20 goal season is definitely attainable, but adding 40 assists is questionable. Same for Anisimov. He appears to have a nose for the net and should get his share of goals, but attaining 60 points is unclear following an okay rookie season. Prospal & Frolov should both be flirting with 60 point seasons. Frolov, looking to prove himself, could be the sleeper here and has that potential to be a 30 goal scorer. I wouldn't expect anything near a 60 point season from Eric Christensen and who knows where Todd White is going to fit in.

When you talk about chemistry, John Tortorella has to play a key role. I understand line juggling to find right combinations, but too much juggling doesn't help build chemistry. Now that Tort's has some new pieces to this offensive puzzle, lets hope he can make them fit and limit the endless line juggling from last season.

todd white has had 1 good season in last 6 so to expect anythnig from him is very doubtful. dubi low to mid 40 's in pts so i don't expect 60 pts from him. seems like huge jump for AA and cally as well.

2 names omitted that can have good yrs given sufficient pp time. drury and the hobbitt

Sounds like a TV show from the 70s...Drury and the Hobbit!

By adding Frolov, the team raised its scoring talent level a bit. Dubi, Cally, Drury, Anisimov etc. have not shown the ability to consistently transform goal scoring opportunities into goals. Part of the issue is a lack of chemistry. I believe that is partly caused by Torts' steadfast refusal to give players time to mesh. It has to change the way that individuals play knowing that a bad night or two means you get moved around.

But I think that a bigger issue is just that these players do not have a nose for the net, an apt expression used above. Too many Rangers forwards just seem to muff good scoring chances on a consistent basis. That's a lack of scoring talent.

Keep in mind that the Rangers spend way too much time cycling the puck behind the net and in the corner without turning their efforts into scoring chances. Their forechecking is not particularly effective either. I really don't know if the Rangers are incapable of executing Torts' system, if he has not been able to properly communicate what he wants or if you just need superior talent to run it correctly.

In any event, Anisimov needs to step up and hopefully he can do so with more experience and better linemates. Frolov needs to play like a guy who wants to get paid. Gaborik needs to stay healthy and the rest of the Rangers need to play better than they have shown they are capable of in the past.

retoxicate drury was a consistent 20 goal scorer before this season so he has shown to be capable. his 1st yr here he led team in goals and gwg and 2nd yr 20 goals

Posted by: LI Joe | August 11, 2010 at 12:25 pm

That is a very fair point LI Joe. And Drury still seems to score a few goals in clutch situations. However, as a Ranger, he has not been consistent in turning offinsive chances into goals. Given his huge salary, which was based on his having been a 30 goal scorer in his last two seasons with the Sabres, his offensive production is not sufficient. Keep in mind that he spent even more time on the ice as a Ranger during his first two season than he did as a Sabre in his last two and his scoring decreased, both at regular strength and power play. Morever, certainly last year, maybe because of the injuries issues, he had long stretches where he has been an inefficient offensive player. As a player who will be 34, coming off a bad season, I don't know that he will score 20 goals this year, nor in the future.

I like and respect Chris Drury but he is a typical Ranger that simply cannot cash in enough on scoring opportunities.

To this point, Chris Drury has been a "bust" for the Rangers. For a player that makes $7m annually there shouldn't even be any dsicussion about the guy "possibly" scoring 20 goals....please....$7m....20 goals...it just doesn't add up.

Posted by: paulinflorida | August 11, 2010 at 03:02 pm

Sather gave $7m to a hard working, clutch player that had only scored 30 goals twice in his career and never reached 70 pts, so for that money there was almost no way that Drury could not be a bust. The question is what can he do for this team to maximize his performance and help this particular team win and will he be able to do it.

The other thing, in Drury's best year as a Ranger, he may have been tied with Jagr for the team goal scoring lead, but he was tied at 58th for the league scoring lead and was 68th in pts scored and 26th in scoring amongst centers. That is not particularly impressive.

Posted by: retoxicate | August 11, 2010 at 03:30 pm

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers....58th in the league in goals...68th in points..$7m....and that was Drury's best year with the Rangers. Hate to see where he stood among the league last season with a measly 32pts (14g/18a). Yes, blame Sather for the "insane" contract, but what it comes down to is that while Chris Drury is a bonafide NHL hockey player, he's not much better than a lot of players around the league making a lot less money. Certainly not in the NHL elite worthy of such a large piece of cash regardless of a "clutch" goal here and there and winning his share of "big" face-offs.

After writing the above comment, I became curious. Not to beat this up too much...Chris Drury was 230th in the league last season in points & 188th in goals according to NHL.com. Knew it wasn't going to be pretty.......

okm mr big shot paul. look att he attached and come up with last yrs roster based on homegrown draft picks - and you can include guys who rangers drafted and wound up on other teams like savard. and you can't use guys like stepan and kreider who were in college.

the choice at forwards is downright pathetic. thats right pathetic.

so the real problem has always been at the draft table. poor results there will invariably lead to overpaying free agents and 90% of free agents are overpaid by significant amts. so yes drury is overpaid by quite a bit - but you can take the quite a bit part out his 1st 2 yrs here.

Like the 1st 2 post by Fred and Paul. Would love to see Aasen make it very difficult to cut him and be an offensive freak, for lack of a better word.

Aasen and especially Frolov have the most incentive to prove something in camp and throughout the year. Christensen will have the shortest leash by far.

Many of the guys are fillers until our forward draft picks make the team. That's when to get excited. This year our excitement again focuses on the blue line with Z and now McD.

They'll fight for the bottom 3 spots again this year. Looking forward to someone to jump up to a high level. Hopefully a kid. If it's Frolov, that will = $.

P.S> I hate these verification codes....!

let's face it. Look at the tapes from last year. Pass from point to point, send the puck behind the net . Cycle, cycle pass back to the point. Pass intercepted, no one shoots the puck when we're in the offense zone. Let's hope that changes
