New York Rangers vs Montreal Canadiens

Rangers Record: 25-15-3

Canadiens Record: 23-16-3

Tonight, Jan. 11, the Rangers return home after a two-game road trip weekend to take on the Canadiens. The Rangers, 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, are also riding a three-game winning streak, and will look to continue winning ways against Montreal.

After a disappointing two games in Florida in which New York was beaten by both the Lightning and the Panthers, the Rangers came back in a fury, winning their next three games, all hard-fought and all by a one-goal margin. The team’s most recent winning streak showcases its ability to play through adversity—coming back from deficits, preserving close leads and playing with passion. These games are so-called “character wins;” they really prove the team’s toughness, intensity and drive to win.

The Rangers have been plagued by a slew of injuries this season, and the last game was no different. In addition to dealing with the long-term injuries of forwards Derek Boogaard, Ryan Callahan and Vinny Prospal, the Rangers lost forward Alexander Frolov to a knee injury sustained during Saturday’s win against St. Louis. Due to the injury, Frolov will miss the remainder of the season and join the Rangers’ prodigious injury list.

To fill the gaps left by these injuries, Rangers General Manager Glen Sather traded veteran defenseman Michal Roszival to the Phoenix Coyotes for forward Wojtek Wolski. Wolski, a 6-3, 215 lb. forward, has had an off-year so far this season. The 24-year old has been a prolific goal-scorer in the past, however, so the Rangers can expect good things from him. Hopefully a change of scenery will be just what he needs to get back to his previous success.

The Habs are dealing with injuries to defensemen Josh Gorges and Andrei Markov, both on the injured reserve. Also, forward Michael Cammalleri, historically extremely successful against the Rangers, will be missing tonight’s game due to illness.

This game should be a real thriller, as it is the first meeting between the two clubs this season. Make sure to tune in to the game and Wolski’s Rangers debut!
