How far will the Rangers get this season?

Rangers Burned by Devils
Offense Shutdown in Devils' 1-0 Victory

The Rangers couldn’t solve the red hot Devils neutral zone trap as they were shutout 1-0 tonight. With a season low 15 shots on goal, the Blueshirts never quite sustained offensive pressure on Devils’ goaltender Johan Hedberg.

Getting up the ice through the Devils was like sifting through cement as they effectively clogged the neutral zone and wore down the Rangers.

Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was stellar in his second start in two straight nights. With 27 saves, he kept the Rangers in it despite the turnovers galore around him.

After the puck hopped over Marc Staal’s skate at the offensive blue line in the second period, Ilya Kovalchuk swooped in for the breakaway. He netted the game winning goal and found a way to beat Lundqvist.

Fatigue may have set in as the Rangers won a hard fought battle against the Los Angeles Kings in a shootout at Madison Square Garden last night. While energy may have been missing from the rivalry game, the offense just wasn’t there. Coach John Tortorella resorted to line juggling again but to no effect. Marian Gaborik and the Rangers power play had the same number of shots on goal: 0.

The Rangers face the Eastern Conference leading Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

Three stars of the game:

1. Kovalchuk

2. Hedberg

3. Lundqvist
