Rangers Sign Brendan Bell
Not great news for Pavel Valentenko and Tomas Kundratek

Brendan Bell

Brendan Bell

The Rangers have announced the signing of 28-year-old defenseman Brendan Bell.  Bell stands 6-1, 205 lbs. and played last season in the Swiss-A League where he registered two goals and nine assists in 29 games.  Bell has played 101 career NHL games with the Maple Leafs, Coyotes and Senators but spent his last season in North America in the AHL.  The signing could represent a replacement for Mikhail Pashnin, who had indicated that he was likely to sign with the Rangers and play for the CT Whale this year before changing his mind this week.  Bell does have NHL experience so he could be in competition for one of the bottom three spots on the Rangers' defense, but it's hard to imagine him making the team ahead of Michael Del Zotto, Tim Erixon, or Steve Eminger.

Bell will likely spend the year in Connecticut, but he could be a call-up in the event of injury.  This signing could impact Pavel Valentenko and Tomas Kundratek, both of whom were dark horses to make the Rangers and figured to be potential mid-season call-ups.  The pecking order will be determined at training camp, but Bell may have just moved into the No. 8 spot on New York's depth chart.

Can anyone tell me who's a right handed shot and who's a lefty? I'd like to see both MDZ and Erixon on the roster, both not together as a pair. McD with Erixon and Sauer with MDZ makes sense style wise, I believe...

I really only think MDZ or Erixon will make the roster this season. Either of which will play with Eminger. Both play similar styles of play, if they both make the roster one will be in the press box until one distinguishes himself above the other or they both do in the defensive end above Eminger. (Given DZ's track history that is very unlikely to happen)

Bell is a CT signing, or to give Eminger a run for his money as the 6-7th. He won't make the team over a young guy that clearly out plays him. Tank has as good a shot as any given his play style and would probably fit nicely along with Erixon on the 3rd pair early-mid season.

Main point-
Things that really need to happen is determine trade value this season while value may still be high. Facts facing time is here the D is pretty solidly set and young. Unless someone like Sauer or McD slip this season, we'll have a back end log jam. 4 d-men are currently looking at 2 spots (not counting the vets, Torts doesn't like having a kid watch in the stands either so it's probably 2 at the start of the season, possibly 1 after depth chart completely settled) Erixon, MDZ, Tank, Kundratek... add McIlrath and then Pashnin (if he ever decides to come back in the next 2 years). Don't get me wrong this isn't a bad problem to have, but moving them for different prospects (younger/scorers), picks or a veteran to help for a playoff run is something that is very likely to happen this or next season.
