We’ll be trying a new Monday-Friday feature on BB this
season to keep you abreast of the latest developments around the National
Hockey League.
Here’s a look at what’s making headlines today:
- Sidney Crosby participated in a “controlled
scrimmage” yesterday. Crosby
probably won’t be ready to start the season, but I’m betting on him returning
by Thanksgiving at the latest and possibly as soon as the start of November.
- Evgeni Malkin is having
a terrific preseason. The Penguins
will need him without Crosby.
“The Igloo” (the Pittsburgh Civic Center) is being
demolished today.
- Matt Cooke, a frequent violator of NHL rules, pledged to change
his playing style, but this
isn’t a good start.
- Bruins winger Nathan Horton was concussed in Game 3 of the
Stanley Cup Finals, but returned
to preseason action against the Canadiens last night. He should be good to go for the season
opener.
- St. Louis Blues forward David Perron has been out of action
since last November with a concussion, but he
will return to the team today.
- 39-year-old Owen Nolan was invited to Vancouver Canucks’
camp on a tryout, but was
cut yesterday.
- NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan continues to doll out
severe punishments. Buffalo Sabre Brad
Boyes was suspended for two preseason games for
this hit and James Wisniewski and Brad Staubitz were both
suspended indefinitely with hearings forthcoming.
- Jaromir Jagr scored
in his first preseason game on Friday night.
- The Flyers released Jagr’s old linemate, Michael
Nylander, and Adam Mair from tryouts.
- Could Patrick Kane be moved to
center?
- Oft-injured New York Islanders goalie Rick
DiPietro is healthy. For now.
- Tampa Bay’s Brett Connolly and Carolina’s Ryan Murphy are
two of the top WHL prospects still
hanging around with their NHL teams.
- Petr Sykora has looked sharp in the preseason and may just
make the Devils. He’s practicing
today on a line with Patrick Elias and Zach Parise.
