After months of speculation, the NHL finally made the
official announcement that the Rangers will play the Philadelphia Flyers in the
2012 Winter Classic.
Here’s everything you need to know about the game:
When: Monday, January 2, 2012, 1:00 p.m.
Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
TV: NBC
- No jerseys have been revealed yet.
- Here’s the Rangers’ logo
for the Classic.
- HBO shot some promotional footage for “24/7: Road to the
Winter Classic” at training camp on
September 14th and was on hand for
today’s announcement. The network should
be a staple around the club for the next few months. The show will debut on Wednesday, December 14th
at 10:00 p.m. and will air four episodes, according
to Steve Zipay.
- Ticket info is still sketchy. The Flyers are waiting for the NHL to
determine how many more seats can be put into Citizens Bank Park before
setting prices and putting them on sale. Flyers’ season-ticket holders will get first crack at buying them.
- The Rangers and Flyers will also play an alumni game on
December 31st at 1:00 p.m. Here’s a look
at who
might be on the Rangers’ alumni squad.
- Here’s a look at how the
rink will fit on the baseball field. And a view from
behind home plate.
- Check out the official
game puck.
- The Rangers are holding a drawing for one fan to win a “Winter
Classic Road Trip Experience for Two.” Details here.
- Rangers GM Glen Sather spoke at the press conference and delivered the
following line, "We're coming to Philadelphia and we're going to win
the game." No, this wasn’t a
guarantee, but it was an amusing attempt by Slats to get a rise out of the
generally cordial audience.
- Sather also said,
“At the end of year we're going to be carrying the Cup after the Yankees win
the World Series.”
