Bulletin Board: Top 2011 Draft Picks Shine In Preseason Action

2012 top pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins picked up three points last night playing with 2010 top pick Taylor Hall

2012 top pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins picked up three points last night playing with 2010 top pick Taylor Hall

We’ll be trying a new Monday-Friday feature on BB this season to keep you abreast of the latest developments around the National Hockey League.

Here’s a look at what’s making headlines today:

- 2011 first-overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins may not be heading back to the WHL.  The center made some magic with Taylor Hall last night as each tallied three points.  Hall is very pleased about the potential of playing with RNH and I think Hall is going to have a huge season.

- Second-overall pick Gabriel Landeskog has already worked his way up to the Avalanche’s first line alongside Paul Stastny and David Jones.  I would think Landeskog would be a better fit with Matt Duchene and Milan Hejduk, but he should have a great chance to pile up some points either way.

- Leading up to the 2011 Draft and even after it the consensus was that seventh-overall pick Mark Scheifele was a few years away from playing in the NHL.  But Scheifele has been a revelation this fall and has probably been the biggest surprise of the preseason.  Winnipeg hasn’t made any decisions yet, but Scheifele might stick around.

- The Washington Capitals are looking like a likely host for the 2012 Winter Classic.

- Alexander Radulov sounds like he’ll be making a return to the NHL next season.  The Nashville Predators still control his rights and he would immediately become their best offensive player.

- Alexei Yashin has signed a one-year deal with CKSA.

- Earlier this week Jan Hejda of the Avalanche suffered a knee injury that was expected to keep him out for two-to-four weeks, but Hejda’s already back on the ice participating in full-contact scrimmages.

- Sam Gagner of the Edmonton Oilers has a sprained ankle and is “week-to-week.”

- The Flyers received a scare on Friday night when Scott Hartnell was diagnosed with an elevated heart rate, but Hartnell has been cleared to return to action by a cardiologist.

- Matt Stajan is ready to be the “whipping boy” in Calgary.

- USA Today’s Kevin Allen lists 10 NHL players with something to prove this season.

- Wayne Simmonds avoided punishment for the incident in Monday night’s game when he allegedly uttered a homophobic slur at Sean Avery.  The NY Post’s Larry Brooks weighs in on that and says the NHL failed to “do its duty.”

- Anaheim Duck Jean-Francois Jacques was suspended for the rest of the preseason and five regular season games for leaving the bench.

- New York Islanders prospect Kirill Kabanov accepted an invitation from a random Facebook friend to join a pick-up roller hockey game.
