The Bulletin Board keeps you abreast of the latest news
around the NHL Monday-Friday.
- Jaromir Jagr picked up point number 1,600 when he assisted
on Claude Giroux’s impressive first period goal for the Philadelphia Flyers
last night. Jagr is just the ninth
player to score 1,600 points and is also now the all-time scoring leader in
season-openers, surpassing Ray Bourque. Philly
went on to beat the defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins 2-1 on the
road.
- No one knows if James Reimer can handle the workload of
being a full-time starting goalie, but the early results are positive. Reimer blanked the Montreal Canadiens last
night with 32 saves as Toronto won its season-opener 2-0. Matthew Lombardi, who played just two games
last season because of a concussion, scored in his first game back for the
Leafs.
- Agitator extraordinaire Matt Cooke picked up two goals last
night for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in a
shootout. Evgeni Malkin scored the
game-winner.
- The felony charge for third-degree drug possession against
Aaron Boogaard has
been dropped.
- NHL opening weekend rosters feature
66 USHL alumni this year, up from 57 a year ago.
- Jason Pominville is the new
captain of the Buffalo Sabres.
- The Phoenix Coyotes signed Martin Hanzal to a
five-year, $15.5 million contract extension.
- Ryan Kesler should miss just the first five or six
games for Vancouver after undergoing hip surgery this summer.
- 2011 fifth-overall pick Ryan Strome is still with the New
York Islanders because of injuries, but he isn’t
likely to actually play and will be returned to juniors once his teammates
are healthy.
- The Dallas Stars signed 14th-overall pick Jamie Oleksiak to an
entry-level deal.
- There are five other games today beside the Rangers’
season-opener, but none will be
nationally televised.
