Tim Erixon Will Stick Around For The Time Being

The Rangers chose to keep Tim Erixon on the roster and demoted Brendan Bell

The Rangers returned to North America today and wasted no time refining their roster.

Defenseman Brendan Bell was assigned to the CT Whale and goalie Scott Stajcer was sent back to the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack.

Bell’s demotion could mean that Tim Erixon impressed the coaching staff enough in the season’s first two games to warrant an extended stay on Broadway.

New York claimed defenseman Jeff Woywitka off waivers on Thursday and though Woywitka didn’t play against Los Angeles or Anaheim, it was assumed that he would take Erixon’s spot in the lineup next weekend.

But the Rangers are always conscious of making sure their young players receive as much ice-time as possible, so it’s not likely that they would have kept Erixon if he was bound to be a healthy scratch.  If Erixon stays with the team, it’s because New York intends to continue deploying him as the sixth defenseman.

Coach John Tortorella didn’t use Erixon too much during crunch time of either Friday or Saturday’s games, but Erixon took fairly regular shifts for the most part and didn’t make many mistakes.

Now that New York is back in North America it can certainly send Erixon back to the Whale at any time, but it seems likely that Erixon will play at least one more game against the New York Islanders on Saturday before the Blueshirts decide whether to keep him for a longer period or insert Woywitka into the lineup.

Of course, the blueline situation has been chaotic already this season as Erixon was originally assigned to the Whale on October 1st before being recalled on October 5th.  So it’s also possible that the Blueshirts may just want Erixon to get more practice time with the NHL club and also give Woywitka time to settle in before making a move later in the week.
