Bulletin Board: Ovechkin Benched

Alex Ovechkin scored 11 game-winning goals last season

Alex Ovechkin scored 11 game-winning goals last season

The Bulletin Board keeps you abreast of the latest news around the NHL Monday-Friday.

- Washington came back from deficits of 3-0 and 4-2 to beat Anaheim in overtime 5-4, but the real story of the game was that Capitals’ Coach Bruce Boudreau benched Alex Ovechkin with Washington seeking the tying goal at the end of regulation.  Nicklas Backstrom ended up evening the score and scoring the eventual game-winner, but it came as a shock that arguably the NHL’s most prolific scorer didn’t see the ice with the game on the line.  Boudreau instead sent out the likes of Brooks Laich, Joel Ward and Jason Chimera and explained the decision by simply saying that he didn’t think Ovechkin was going to score, but the Laich line had played well and was being rewarded.  Normally it would make sense for a coach to stick with guys that give his team the best chance to win and if Boudreau didn’t think Ovechkin was one of them last night, then he made the right call.  But this guy is a proven 50-goal scorer, if he isn’t your best chance to score, that’s a problem.  Ovechkin seemed to mutter something under his breath at Boudreau on the bench, but after the game he said all the right things.

- Teemu Selanne’s factored into all four of Anaheim’s goals in the losing effort.  Selanne passed Dave Andreychuk and now sits in 13th place on the all-time goal-scoring list and is tied for 25th in career points with Guy Lafleur.

- Former Ranger Chris Higgins picked up his sixth goal of the season in Vancouver’s 5-1 victory over Calgary.

- The struggling Bruins snapped Ottawa’s six-game winning streak to pick up their fourth win of the season.

- Chad LaRose and Jeff Skinner each scored twice as Carolina glided by Tampa Bay 4-2.

- Devin Setoguchi’s OT game-winner helped Minnesota send the Red Wings to their fifth-straight loss.

- Tampa Bay rookie Brett Connolly scored his first NHL goal as did Ottawa rookie defenseman Jared Cowen.

- Last night Detroit unveiled its latest stud Swedish prospect, forward Gustav Nyquist

- Columbus has decided to keep 2010 first-round pick Ryan Johansen and will not send him back to the WHL.

- The New York Islanders will send 2010 first-round pick Nino Niederreiter to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for a two week conditioning stint before he’ll presumably return to the NHL lineup.

- Eric Staal has just five goals in 11 games and is an atrocious minus-13.  Pro Hockey Talk wonders if he’s a little distracted because of his hit on Marc Staal that has kept Eric’s younger brother out of action.

- Can you believe this?  Matt Cooke had just four penalty minutes in October.  He also scored four goals and made four assists.

- Edmonton’s Andy Sutton was suspended five games for an illegal hit on Gabriel Landeskog.

- The folks at NHL.com have released their super-early 2012 mock drafts.

- Investigators have discovered that pilot error caused the Lokomotiv plane crash on September 7th.

- There are three games on the schedule tonight.  Philadelphia @ Buffalo will be on Versus at 7:30 p.m.
