No Room for Moral Victories
Rangers fall to Penguins 5 - 2 despite better effort

In October and November, while the NHL season is still young, it's easy to say that a loss can be built on by taking the positives and moving on.

So on the last day of November, where does a 5 - 2 loss fall? It can't necessarily be a learning tool nor is it time to begin looking diligently at the standings.

It's somewhere in-between, but one sentiment is clear: the Rangers need to start getting points.

Sitting outside the playoff picture and at the .500 mark for the first time since the beginning of the season, there is a dismal feeling around the Blueshirts and nobody is sure exactly when it will turn around.

"We need key plays at key times," said Head Coach John Tortorella. And tonight, that's exactly what Pittsburgh got.

New York broke a scoreless tie in the second period on a goal by Marian Gaborik, seemingly the only Ranger capable of doing so. But a mere seconds later, Sidney Crosby broke down ice and tied the game.

Just like that, the Garden went on an emotional roller coaster before anyone had time to blink.

Pittsburgh gained the lead on a goal by former New Jersey Devil Mike Rupp. The Rangers lost the defensive zone draw and a bobbling puck bounced away from Henrik Lundqvist and onto the stick of Rupp who buried his first of three goals.

But the Rangers were able to tie the game in the final minutes of the period on the power play with another goal by Gaborik. Chris Drury, who had a much more involved and energetic game, took a slap shot from the point and Gaborik put home the rebound.

The third period would be critical for the Rangers as a much-needed home victory was within reach. But the effort wore thin and the Penguins outworked the Rangers for the latter half of the period, tallying two goals and an empty netter for the final score of 5 - 2.

Following the game, the players and coach acknowledged that the Rangers played a decent game for 50 minutes. Something positive following poor overall efforts the previous two games, but still well short of their ultimate goal: two points.

So the Rangers will look to a four day break from games, with an off-day tomorrow, and hope to regroup and refocus, which Lundqvist thinks could be a good thing.

"It may be good to take a step back and see what we need to do as a team," he said.

They had better get things together soon, as time is slowly becoming a factor.

They may want to consider keeping Sanguinetti up for the long term and send Rozival down to Hartford or offer a buyout completely - which would be optimal. Throw in the towel in terms of hoping to achieve something because they won't and let the kids learn. between the absentee ownership and a sham President/GM who is absolutely clueless in how to operate a hockey club, I have no idea where to turn. Having been a die-hard fan for 30 years, I am saddened, perplexed and mortified at the lack of care that upper management has for this club. How long before will it be before Lundqvist decides he actually wants to win something in his career and demands a trade? How much more can the Garden fans tolerate? Why are they so passive that they do not call for Sather's head? How can an experienced beat writer like Larry Brooks still long for the Renney era - as if that were something worth bragging about - and continually give a free pass to the sham and the owner? These are strange times in general and nowhere is that more apparent than in rangerland.

Agree Steve....I hate watching them lose without effort and with the never ending list of mental errors. I would keep Sanguinetti and eat Rozivals contract. I would bring up the kids from Hartford and see what they can do. Clearly the team is sinking fast and is not even enjoyable to watch. I am also distressed by the silence of Glenn Sather. I woud like to see him have some sort of comment on their current free fall.

"WE'RE LOSING!!! THEY'RE BURYING US ALIVE" Steve says he doesn't know where to turn. Is Strother Martin still alive?? If so, SIGN HIM!! He couldn't do a worse job than Sather and the Rangers would at least be entertaining with compulsory fashion shows, hysterical radio pubs and the ever present recycled jock straps. Maybe Joe could resurrect the Hansons and maybe bring in Dave's son Christian from the Leafs for good measure. The Rangers sure sound and look like the Chiefs to me. Since Reggie is dead, maybe Joe could put a bounty on Cindy's head for "the first of his guys to really nail that creep" Oh, I forgot, the Rangers don't hit anybody and certainly wouldn't for a measly $100.00. Where's Dr Hook when you need him. I'm done, hope you enjoyed the humor. LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

To Sean:

If you were sather, why would you comment? he obviously has nothing to fear in terms of his job security. His arrogance and lack of respect for the fans of New York is obvuious and appaling. Anyone who claims that they would seriously consider signing a 36 year old peter forsberg with the history of injuries he has obviously is not thinking clearly. Sather doesn't put teams together. He puts new faces in positions. That is not team building. Why is it that the Penguins were able to go through 2-3 years of growing pains and end up with one cup and 2 straight finals appearances? Because they have a plan and the Sather led rangers do not. Why is it that the rangers continue to go through coaches every couple of years but do not consider replacing the man in charge of all of hirings and firings? I can go on and on with this man's lack of respect for the players (i.e.: Malhotra, McLean, Kasparitis and Brian Leetch to start), his insistancel in signing big names years past their production and health peak (i.e.: Lindors, Malakov, Jagr and what happens when Gaborik finally gets injured?) and his continued floundering and trying to squeexe square pegs into a round hole. If this guy ran a public company, he'd be arrested.

Great post Steve, and it is all true....if he ran a public company he would be gone. I have yet to see any plan in his tenure other than the post strike year where, for a brief moment, they appeared on the right track towards building the future. Since then we have endured a parade of over paid, under achievers . I really wish we would see more of the enthusiastic hard hitting youth that made so many of us happy in 2005

He traded them all away!
