I guess one missed coverage as a rookie earns you a demotion.
Matt Gilroy, who was beat last night in OT by Chicago's Dustin Byfuglien, was assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack today along with backup goaltender Chad Johnson.
Goalie Matt Zaba has been recalled.
In the past ten games, Gilroy has seen his time diminish while being relegated to third pairing duties. The former Hobey Baker winner came on strong in his first appearances with the Rangers, but has lacked confidence of late.
Recently recalled defenseman Ilkka Heikkinen will play in his place.
A bit of a surprising move overall, but not a bad experience if taken positively by Gilroy. It's a chance for quality minutes as well as gaining some confidence.
Coming from the college game straight to the NHL is not an easy transition so perhaps some time in-between at the AHL level makes sense.
But, as Larry Brooks of the NY Post "tweeted", what about Rozsival? If Gilroy deserves a demotion, can't think of a worthier candidate to join him than Rozsival.
