So much for a turnaround.

Following a four-game winning streak, the Rangers fell twice at MSG, first against the Islanders in OT and last night 6 - 0 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Rangers needed a good effort last night to show the fans and themselves that they were lifted from the early December doldrums and could sustain a better work ethic.

Instead, it was one step forward and six steps back.

Former Ranger Blair Betts opened the scoring (and coincidentally the eventual game-winner) for Philadelphia just 54 seconds into the game in his typical fashion, a hardworking play in front of the net where no Ranger bothered to do much more than smack a stick. No body contact, no tying up of the stick, no paying the price.

That theme would continue throughout the night.

Then midway through the period, following a defensive zone turnover by Marc Staal, Danny Briere would connect off some nifty passing with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. Briere was left alone as the Rangers lost their coverage and he deked goaltender Henrik Lundqvist low to the stick side.

A couple minutes later, Claude Giroux would take advantage of another defensive zone turnover to put the Flyers ahead 3 - 0.

Following the first period, Head Coach John Tortorella pulled Lundqvist to give rookie Chad Johnson his first NHL appearance, but the Rangers continued to let their goalies hangout to dry as Brandon Dubinsky overhandled the puck at his own blueline and allowed Simon Gagne to score the first of his three goals only 23 seconds into the period.

Gagne would net his second goal on a 5-on-3 power play off a pass from behind the net by Briere. With Staal and Wade Redden in the box, Carter got the puck deep to Briere who found Gagne in the slot uncontested.

In the third period, Gagne would complete the natural hat trick off a tic-tac-toe passing play with Giroux and Mike Richards. Giroux found Gagne streaking alone down the wing without any coverage and passed directly through all the flat-footed Rangers.

Gagne ended up with four points.

With another listless effort in the books, the Rangers are left scratching their heads about how to rally and find some battle level the remainder of the season.

It should be apparent by now to anyone with a modicum of detachment that the recent winning streak was little more than a band-aid on a cancer patient. Without sounding like a constant broken record, this is all about the upper management, and it comes down to the incompetence of the owner and the 'sham' GM/President. The coach in my view is not the issue here. The players should have to take a good look in the mirror and decide what they want to do for a living. But with the tag-team of Dolan and Sather, they don't have to. With, the Rangers financial handicap is so severe that they can't make any moves that would potentially improve their plight, the redden's, Rozival's, Drury's, brashier's and Kotalik's of the world will continue to find a safe and warm employment. Moving along, then the question becomes when you have someone so drunk with their own power driving the team, it is only ineveitable what is eventually going to happen. They are going to crash. Truth be told, the Sather regime crashed back in 2002 after two years of missing the playoffs. However, the embarassment continues uninterupted with the driver be let go time and time again and not being held for the onsequences of his actions like rest of us mere mortals are.

Neil Smith, while certainly imperfect cared. It showed on his face and his actions. He held himself accountable, was available to both fans and press and took the heat when it was deserved (who will ever forget the dreadful trade bringing McSorley, Kurri and Churla to New York) and even on occassion when it was not deserved. Last night was the low point and to think I thought that this "team" hit bottom during the last losing streak. I was wrong. Last night was this "team" hitting lead - which is below bottom.

Gaborik is going to find the same struggles that Jagr did in his peak season as a Ranger. Teams will start double-teaming him limiting his chances to be effective. And why shouldn't they? Who else can score for these Rangers? Kotalik? Higgins?

Finally, it should be noted that Donald Brashier is doing nothing but wasting valuable playing time for someone who may actually give a s*** about playing for the New York Rangers. I was certainly willing to give him the benfit of the doubt in offering him a fresh start in New York and forgetting about the hit of last year on Blair Betts. Guess who lost the battle and guess who won the war? Whiel Betts was celbrating his goal, I wonder if the 'sham' thought twice about letting him go for absolutely nothing. Aaron Voros is not the fighter Bashier is and is certainly not the player that even Sean Avery is. However, when he is in the line-up he tries. He'll fight and charge the net. Brashier is a dead-man walking who is insulting the paying fans by not even going through the motions. I can't believe that this is the same guy who terrorized and intimidated opponents for the last 15 years. Like the 'sham', Brashier ought to be embarassed every time he cashes his check.

What a mess!

What exactly does brashear bring to the lineup that Orr didn't? besides a complete lack of effort nothing. my favorite replay of last night was brashear losing the puck on that goal and just taking his hand off of his stick and shrugging his shoulders. What a waste, let 2 guys on the fourth line in Betts and Orr walk away that bled Ranger blue for nothing. Because you have managed to get so much production out of the assortment of players on the 4th line without them. besides a couple goals from boyle and a goal from dru the 4th line has been just as pathetic offensively but now can't play defense. At least Orr would have started a fight or 2 last night to try and jump start something instead they all laid down, and played dead.

JMV:

It kills me that Dolan ("I've never actually earned a thing that I have) Jr. let 'JD' leave to keep this peice of garbage. It should be noted that 'JD' is still a Ranger in every sense of the word as he still attends most special ceremonies in the Garden because the ties are that deep. That is not lost on those about the history of the franchise. Only those that don't. Unfortunately, two of them happen to be the owner and the GM/President.

KWILL:

Dismanteling last year's 4th line for absolutely nothing - except higher limitations on the payroll is yet another example of the foolishness and idiocy of the 'sham' GM/President. Colton Orr was a good fighter, good team guy and was actually developing some skills. He sort of reminded me of a young Tie Domi when Domi was a Ranger. Betts and Sjostrom (sp.) were among the best penalty killing units in the league. It seems that whenever the idiot stumbles upon something successful, he lets them go elsewhere and brings in new stiffs like Bashier, Boyle, Kotalik and jeez, the list just goes on and on. It is time to flood MSG with phone calls and for God sake, quit filling the arena. Only an empty arena will convince fatboy Dolan to consider making a change.

I agree that Brashear is useless. But who would want Orr for the 4 years and dollars that Toronto gave him? The mismanagement of the salary cap guaranteed that Orr couldn't return.
