The team that goes by the hashtag #bleedblue made it 2 straight wins over the Wheeling Nailers after a thrilling 4-3 overtime win in game 2 of their ECHL conference semifinals. Josh Nicholls recorded the overtime winner as the Road Warriors head back to Greenville for 3 games having taken both games in Wheeling.

Here is the game report from Andy Zilch who is the media relations manager and broadcaster for the Greenville Road Warriors.

Road Warriors Battle Back to Win 4-3 in Overtime

Wheeling, WV: The Road Warriors fought back from a two goal deficit in the third period to force overtime and eventually win 4-3 on a goal from Josh Nicholls.

Dustin Stevenson struck first for the Nailers with shot that snuck past goaltender Jason Missiaen along the post. Stevenson’s first of the playoffs was scored after Denver Manderson shot the puck wide and rolled to the boards. Zack Torquato also assisted on the only score of the first period. Both teams had a power play which they could not capitalize on. Wheeling outshot the Road Warriors 17-11 during the first frame.

5:06 into the second period, the Nailers took a 2-0 lead with a power play goal from Manderson. His slapshot goal came after a scramble in front of the Greenville net. Max MacKay and Sahir Gill assisted on the tally. After a hit that knocked Manderson out of the game, tempers began to rise. Directly after the hit, Scott Arnold put the Road Warriors on the board with a wrist shot that hit the post and went into the net. Emerson Clark made the pass the Arnold to continue his point streak to three games. Jordie Johnston also assisted on the goal. A penalty to Justin Vaive was issued late in the second and carried over to the third period with the Nailers leading 2-1.

The Nailers didn’t waste any time as the third period began.  Just 31 seconds in, Zack Torquato beat Missiaen blocker side for his first goal of the playoffs. Andrew Yogan brought the Road Warriors back within a goal at 6:52. The power play tally, Yogan’s third goal of the playoffs, made the game 3-2. The Road Warriors thought they had the game tied up when Josh Nicholls knocked a puck out of midair past Condon on the power play. However, after a conference, the officials ruled the puck had been batted in by a high stick. The tying goal would come just a few minutes later. Kyle Jean found a loose puck in traffic in front of the net and buried it to tie the game 3-3 and force overtime.

The teams exchanged scoring chances in extra time. A bad angle shot from Andrew Rowe nearly beat Condon; but after a scrum in front of the net, the Nailers goaltender was able to cover. Just a few minutes later, Road Warriors forward Josh Nicholls sailed a backhander wide on a breakaway. Nicholls redeemed himself later on in overtime. After Andrew Yogan launched a shot on goal from the point, Josh Nicholls hammered in the rebound to give Greenville the 4-3 win.

Missiaen recorded his fifth win of the playoffs for Greenville, stopping 42 of 45 shots. Condon took the loss for Wheeling, turning away 42 of 46 shots faced. The Road Warriors now return to Greenville with the 2-0 series lead.
